Principal's Message (from January 2009 Newsletter):
In this season, whether you celebrate Hanukkah, Christmas, Kwanza or none of the above, the New Year brings with it opportunity for reflection, thanks, appreciation and opportunities to address the happenings of 2008. In the spirit of these things, I wish to reflect on the launch of our 2008-2009 school year.
In reflection, we are off to a great start. We increased the rigor of our academic offerings; we saw the return and extension of electives, a change in dress code and the welcome of our new staff. Of course, like any family, we experienced our share of unique challenges. In the end, we know our end goal is “college”. The journey to college is filled with detours, roadblocks and cautionary tales, however we will remain committed to doing whatever it takes to achieve the goal. On a sad note, this past year also brought the loss of two former students as well as the loss of family members for several of our current students. We will continue to keep all of you in our thoughts as we begin the New Year.
In appreciation, on behalf of Mrs. Brady-Medley and myself, I would like to thank all of our parents who have stayed in the fight to create an educational environment that produces college success. We thank you for ensuring your students get to school on time, submit assignments on time and are respectful. We appreciate the hosts of families who have quietly assisted advisors and students in community service or advisory projects. Finally, we appreciate your patience and commitment to supporting us as we uphold the mission of our school, which we cannot do without your attendance at exhibitions and learning team meetings.
As we look ahead to seize the opportunities that 2009 will bring us, we ask for a renewed commitment to improving our roles at University Prep High School. We have asked our staff to use this break to reflect and renew their spirits, because we know this is good hard work that we do everyday. In keeping, we are asking parents to take this break to have crucial conversations with your children about their future goals. Ask them, are you living the goal of college today? What do you plan to do differently 2nd trimester than the first? Sit down and create 2 or 3 goals for 2009 with your children around commitment to great attendance, submitting work on time and building a strong student culture.
Be safe this holiday break and we look forward to seeing your in the New Year.
Sincerely,
Danielle Jackson
