Learning Through Internships (LTI)

Through various learning activities and interest explorations, students uncover genuine passions. The LTI program, short for Learning Through Internships, gives University Prep students an opportunity to work closely with an adult mentor who shares their interests. Students can learn more about the things they care most about while doing meaningful work with real-world consequences. Advisors work closely with mentors to ensure that the internship develops skills from the student’s learning plan.

LTI projects engage students because the internships are based on student interest and passions. LTI projects also show students the importance of multiple areas of study; since the projects require them to make use of several University Prep Learning skills. For example a pair of students working with a zoologist at Belle Isle Zoo on an aquarium building project need to use not only the skills associated with science and data collection, but also writing and presentation skills, as well as time management.

Other student LTI projects this year at University Prep include:

• A student doing research for the Marketing Director of the Detroit Red Wings on a strategy for interesting Detroit middle school students in professional hockey.

• Four students interning with the Detroit Free Press and the Detroit News learning writing, researching and editing skills, and publishing pieces in the paper.

• A student working with an architect at the Albert Kahn firm designing her dream house – while learning history, geometry and computer skills.

• A team of students interning at a local elementary creating “Tutoring Kits” for first grade teachers, learning social reasoning, research and project skills.
