PARENT INVOLVEMENT POLICY

The University Preparatory Elementary School - Ellen Thompson Campus believes that a strong partnership with parents is a critical aspect of any successful school. In our view, this kind of partnership involves a shared commitment to rigorous educational goals for every student, a collaboratively developed plan accomplish those goals, ongoing discussions about student progress and cooperation in working through any problems that develop.

To that end, we believe that parents should be meaningfully involved in:

  • developing and implementing appropriate strategies for helping their child achieve the learning objectives that lead to accomplishing the learning outcomes;
  • home environment which encourages learning and augments, the learning experiences provided by the school;
  • establishing the learning outcomes for their child with the goal of developing a responsible, adult member of society;
  • establishing and supporting a consistent and shared approach to child guidance and discipline;
  • providing for the proper health, safety, and well-being for their child;

The University Prep Elementary - Ellen Thompson Campus is committed to providing clear and concise communication to parents. The Principal is responsible for maintaining an environment for effective communication with parents which includes:

  • Providing child's individual assessment results, reading results and narratives
  • Providing student handbooks that outline each school's discipline plan, attendance policy and uniform policy.
  • Providing multiple opportunities for direct communication with teachers
  • School Newsletters and classroom newsletters and /or blogs informing parents of events at the school or in class.
  • Parents as Partners/Round Table discussions will be scheduled to allow for parents to voice concerns and ways to improve the school environment and student achievement.
  • Parent-student-teacher compact (outlines how parents and school staff will share the responsibility for improved student achievement of their children). This compact will be discussed at the first learning team meeting and as necessary throughout the school year.
  • School will have a "meet your teacher week".
  • Learning Team Meeting/Exhibitions will be held 4xs per year. These are a parental involvement requirement.
  • Narratives are sent home 3xs per year
  • Teachers can and will use multiple ways of communicating with parents:
  • Phone
  • Email
  • Newsletters
  • Narratives
  • Learning Team Meetings
  • Websites/blogs
  • Other as necessary
  • Ensuring that all communications are provided in language parents understand.
  • Ensuring disabled parents can fully participate in child's education and school activities.

Relationship with Parents

University Prep Elementary -Ellen Thompson Campus depends on parents to assume and exercise responsibility for their children's behavior. We recognize the responsibility to monitor students' behavior and the importance of cooperation between the school and the parents in matters relating to conduct.

For the benefit of the child, the school expects parents to support their child's career in school by:

  • participating in school;
  • Volunteering (in classroom or school events)
  • Attending Parents as Partners Meeting
  • Attending Scheduled LTM/Exhibitions
  • supporting the teachers and the school in maintaining discipline and a safe and orderly learning environment;
  • requiring their child observes all school rules and regulations;
  • supporting and/or enforcing consequences for their child's willful misbehavior in school
  • sending their children to school with proper attention to his/her health, personal cleanliness, and proper UPA uniform
  • maintaining an active interest in their child's daily work, and making sure all assigned work is completed on time ant to the best of the student's ability
  • reading all communications from the school, signing all appropriate documents and asking questions when necessary
  • attending all Learning Team Meetings and Exhibitions and being a vital part of the team in moving your student academically and socially forward

Attendance Policy

Maintaining regular and timely school attendance is critical to academic achievement and school success. The charts below outline parent and staff/advisor responsibilities regarding student attendance and tardiness.

Days Absent Parent Responsibility Staff Responsibility Advisor/Office
Student absent for one (1) day Parent must call the school by 9:00 to explain the absence and student's expected return to school Will call home if no call is received from parent. If message is left with office they must inform the teacher.
Student absent for three (3) days Parent must bring a letter of excuse from doctor Inform the front desk of the 3rd day. FSC/Receptionist will call parents to get updated information and send out letter to remind them of attendance policy.
Student absent for five (5) days within a trimester Parent must attend a conference with the principal to create a contract to ensure consistent attendance at school Schedule meeting with parent (and student, as appropriate) to develop improvement contract. If this meeting is ignored or not attended after 1(one) rescheduling the family will automatically be referred to the Hearing Committee.
Student absent for ten (10) days Parent must meet with the Hearing Committee The Principal will require parent/guardian to meet with the Hearing Committee to resolve any outstanding issues preventing regular school attendance.
Student absent additional five (5) days Parent must work with Prosecutor’s office to resolve issues Principal will make immediate referral to Prosecutor’s office.

Tardy Policy

School begins promptly at 8:15 A.M. It is imperative that all students arrive to school on time for optimal learning. When students are late, they miss instruction which affects academic achievement. In addition the morning lessons are disrupted for all and routines cannot be established. This is also consistent with removing your student early from school.
