HISTORY

In 2000, University Prep Academy first opened its doors to 112 6th grade students. The school was housed in the basement of a church located on Medbury Street in the city of Detroit. As luck would have it, the church was appropriately named “The Promise Land.” The hopeful parents of these pioneer students trusted the promise University Prep offered: Send your children to our school, and we will make sure that they graduate from High School and go on to post-secondary education. In 2001, this Middle School moved into a rehabbed medical center near Wayne State University, where it has continued to thrive to the present day (5310 St. Antoine Street). Since that time, University Prep has grown dramatically. In 2003, we opened University Prep High School (600 Antoinette) to serve the 8th grade students who were leaving our Middle School, and in 2005 and 2008, we opened Elementary Schools at 957 Holden and 435 Amsterdam, completing our University Prep Academy School District. University Prep graduated its first class of seniors in 2007. The graduation rate for that year was 93%. The graduation rate for the following year, 2008, was even better, at 100%. In both instances, more than 90% of those graduates enrolled in post-secondary educational programs. While University Prep is an ever-evolving, excellence-seeking school district, one element remains constant – the delivery on the promise of High School graduation and post-secondary education.

FUNDER

The Thompson Foundation and University Prep…

"Bob and Ellen Thompson, the Plymouth couple who have committed their personal fortune to improving education for poor children, paid for [the construction of] the charter school, [University Prep High School]. It cost $15 million-- about half what a similar public school would cost-- and now that he's had some practice at school building, Thompson thinks 'we can get that down to $12 million next time.'...[Doug] Ross' deal with the Thompsons is to graduate 90 percent of the students and send 90 percent of the graduates on to college. 'He'll either hit those marks or we'll have an office building there,' says Thompson, who made his money in the road paving business. 'I didn't run just another construction company, and we don't want this to be just another school.' Ross gets the message. If a student doesn't show up for school, he puts on his overcoat and goes knocking on doors."
